Traffic Chika: My Lil’ Hula Dream Come True

I’ve just come from a short vacation in Singapore. And my goal was to CHILL.

I was also out on a mission to learn to dance the hula. Singapore has a number of serious hula schools and we have none.

I’ve been searching for years and I’ve been real sad that we don’t have a school that teaches this sacred and beautiful dance.

So I was real happy when I found Ka Pa Hula Ka Lei Maile Hi’Ilani- a hula school in Singapore that teaches hula in the traditional manner.

It was an incredible experience for me. Something I felt down in my soul. Our teacher or alakai warmly embraced me in the fold of her class and so did her students.

So last night, while having dinner with my husband and kids, they asked me to show them what I had learned.

Akala nila mahihiya ako. Ewan ko ba- my nearest and dearest pero hindi pa rin ako kilala.

It was like I was asked to eat ice cream.

I eagerly stood up and danced an entire dance for them.

They gave me a standing ovation.

I’m so so SO proud of me.

For taking my place in a class of long time hula dancers – like I was entitled to that place- not feeling I was a bother or a burden and unapologetically enjoyed every step, every swing of my hips, every hand gesture, every Hawaiian song played- on one level I had no idea what its meaning was but on another level, I understood.

I’m a writer and words are my world but more and more I am taught to inhabit a world where words are not necessary to feel the moving river inside me.

I’m so proud of me most of all for making my dream happen.

There is nothing quite like it. Your soul sings and pats you on the back for having done this.

Today I wish you the same.

You know that dream that’s been calling to you? Make it happen.

You can do it. You have it in you!

Have a great day, guys!

Mahalo for the love ❤️
